　　你看过电影《长城》吗？这部奇幻电影描述了建造长城的目的是为了抵御怪兽。

　　这是真的吗？长城的平均高度是7.8米。说实话，不是很高。那么，长城到底是抵御什么的呢？它又是如何发挥作用的呢？

　　在中国古代，长城最初是为了抵御外族侵扰而建的。

　　哨兵一旦发现有敌人入侵，就会把烽火台用火把点亮放狼烟。这样军情就可以从一个烽火台到另一个烽火台，直至传递到军事中心。这是最古老但有效的信息传递方式。

　　那么援军如何能迅速抵达呢？

　　这看上去是不是像一条现代化的高速公路？

　　长城的另一个功能就是快速输送兵力。山脊上有一条宽阔的公路，那么援军就可以通过这条公路直接到达入侵点。

　　至今，长城的防御系统仍被公认为历史上令人赞叹的壮举之一。

　　中国的长城不仅是世界上最伟大的奇迹之一，也是中华民族的象征。这是我最喜欢的中华宝贝。

　　Have you watched "The Great Wall" movie? This fantasy film depicts that the purpose of building the Great Wall was to resist monsters. Is it true?

　　The average height of the Great Wall is 7.8 meters. Honestly, it’s not very high. So, what exactly did the Great Wall resist? And how does it work?

　　In ancient China, the Great Wall was built originally to protect the northern borders against intrusions by various nomadic groups. The beacon tower would be lit up by torches if a watchman spotted an enemy invasion. Messages could be passed to the military center from one beacon tower to another. It’s the oldest but effective way of information transmission.

　　Then how can reinforcements quickly arrive?

　　It seems like a modern highway, doesn't it?

　　Another function of the Great Wall is to quickly transport troops. There is a wide highway along the ridge. The reinforcements would be able to take the highway and get to the invasion point directly.

　　Today, the defensive system of the Great Wall is generally recognized as one of the impressive architectural feats in history.

　　The Great Wall of China is not only one of the greatest wonders of the world, but also a symbol of the Chinese nation. It’s my favorite Chinese treasure.
